Maiken and I had been considering cycling over the Alps on Via Claudia Augusta, but we were tired of being cold and wet, so we opted for a Flixbus to Zürich.
It was good we took the bus because on the southern side of the Alps it was raining. When we popped out of the tunnel on the northern side of the Alps, we were above the snowline and it was only 3°c. It would not have been that pleasant to cycle in. Instead we were warm and dry, and our bikes travelled on a good Thule bike carrier on the back of the bus.
We had a shock in Zürich with the prices. We went to a street food festival at the Central Station, and I paid 14.90 Swiss Francs (almost NZ$30) for one very small and very poor burrito. I didn't buy a drink!
Maiken decided on a route that had us exit Switzerland into Germany and then enter Switzerland again. Have a look at Google Maps around Jestetten in Germany how that's possible. We had a lovely time cycling along the Rhine River and enjoyed Swiss Mövenpick ice cream by the Rhinefall.
The Swiss statistics:
Total distance cycled: 60km
